Jack London Square is a waterfront urban/mixed-use neighborhood with a rich history tied to its namesake, the famous author and adventurer Jack London. Originally a bustling port and industrial area, it has transformed into a trendy hub known for its dining, entertainment, and scenic views of the San Francisco Bay.

Today, Jack London Square attracts a diverse mix of residents, including young professionals, artists, and urban dwellers seeking a lively urban experience with a touch of waterfront charm. The area has many modern condos that were either built as new construction or converted from older industrial buildings. There is a wide range of prices. Connect to San Francisco with the ferry, or walk to BART. My personal favorites in the neighborhood are the weekend Farmers Market and the range of restaurants.

The ferry to San Francisco leaves from JLS, and the newer free water taxi to Alameda. You will find Fang’s bronzed footprints to track Jack London’s path through the waterfront. London’s original Alaskan cabin was abandoned after the Gold Rush and in 1965 dismantled and two replicas were constructed from the original logs. One is located in Alaska, while the other was sent here to Oakland, where it was reassembled at Jack London Square. A few steps away is London’s popular hang-out[Heinhold’s First and Last Chance Saloon](https://www.heinoldsfirstandlastchance.com/). Its rustic, quirky, and very much worth the visit.
