Beloved Oakland Eatery Pomella to Close Amid Rising Costs and Changing Dining Trends

Sharon Alva April 29, 2025

Pomella, a widely acclaimed Israeli-Californian restaurant in Oakland, will close on May 26, 2025, after five years in business. Chef-owner Mica Talmor attributes the closure to soaring costs—from ingredients to insurance—and a decline in customer turnout, particularly for everyday dining. Known for dishes like cheese-stuffed falafel, pomegranate-glazed eggplant, and vibrant salads, Pomella was a pandemic-era success story that thrived on takeout, but now faces an unsustainable financial model. Talmor noted that today’s diners are more selective, opting for special occasions over casual meals. While the closure marks the end of Pomella in its current form, Talmor remains hopeful for a future comeback, potentially with support from a restaurant group. For its final weekend, Pomella will sell off its pantry goods, spices, and frozen items to the public.
